Description
Ancient coins from Eleusis. Front: Demeter in winged snake chariot holding grain, Back: Pigs.
Demeter was worshipped at the Eleusinian Mysteries twice a year, in Eleusis, a town outside of Athens. During the mysteries, initiates were sworn to secrecy, but it is known that each participant sacrificed a piglet after purification rituals. It is theorized that the remains were ceremoniously collected and composted, then after a few months, were mixed with seed to be sowed in the fields, to ensure fertility and a good harvest. The mysteries were about the cycle of life and death for plants, animals, and people. Basically every famous Greek was an initiate, and was changed by the mysteries, reportedly no longer fearing death. Thanks in part to the sacred pigs. The mysteries continued until Eleusis was destroyed by Christians in the fourth century BCE. Eleusis was the only town in Attica allowed to mint coins.
